Interesting report coming to us here on 60minuteswiththegeeks. Nigeria will be participating in the World Cyber Games coming up this year from the 5th to 9th of November in Cologne, Germany. Thisday reports that Nigeria’s participation will be limited to Fifa ‘08, Need for Speed (Pro Street) and Virtual Fighter 5. Other games that will be played during the event include Counter-Strike 1.6, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne and Ages of Empires III: The Asian Dynasties. It appears these games have been selected to cover a good number of genres.
Three flag bearers for Nigeria will emerge in the national preliminaries (coming up June 17-22) and finals (July 18-19; The ACGON website puts it at July 25-26) that are to take place at The Event Place, Planet-One, Maryland, Lagos. Registration for the event will commence on Sun, May 4th and is open to all Nigerians aged 16 and above. This is the first time Nigeria will be participating in this event that started about 8 years ago and we’re excited that gaming is getting the attention it deserves.
We’ve always believed gaming is a serious sport and that there should be an event just like the Olympics where computer gamers are allowed to compete with each other for titles. We’ll be keeping you posted on this one as we get more information.
Stay tuned.
